During Autumn 2004 the Woodland Trust challenged the people of Guilsfield to plant 1100 native broadleaved trees, to create a new piece of woodland at Granllyn Pool and extend the existing Woodland Trust site. The extension, some 1.3 ha (3.2 acres) in size, is of huge value for wildlife, as it is part of the Granllyn Pool SSSI and Candidate Special Area of Conservation, designated because of the rare Great Crested Newt population in Granllyn Pool itself. Planting native, broadleaves trees at the site will help to further enhance its value to wildlife.
The Trust ran a successful campaign to acquire the site during the winter of 2003-04, together with the local community and the local newspaper, the County Times. There was a public tree planting event at the site on Saturday 20 November2004, and separate tree planting events for schools at around the same time.
