As part of the Trafalgar Woods project, the Woodland Trust has purchased 350 acres of land near Canterbury in Kent as a site for Victory Wood to represent the flagship of the fleet at Trafalgar.
The site is hugely important in conservation terms. The woods of the Blean arch around Canterbury like an umbrella. The 80 different woods, covering some 7,000 acres, have been wooded for over 1,000 years and are recognised as a national treasure on a grand scale.
The woodland, which used to be at Lamberhurst Farm, was destroyed over the last 25- 50 years. The Woodland Trust now has the chance to start the restoration of this landscape and help endangered species such as the dormouse and heath fritillary butterfly flourish here again.
What’s more is that we really would like to involve the children of Kent in its creation. We plan to involve them with tree planting and with growing young trees from seed collected in the surrounding ancient woods.
