Feeding birds

Feeding garden birds is now hugely popular, with many millions of households across the UK enjoying being able to attract a wide variety of species.

These include: Great Tit, Blue Tit, Coal Tit, Long Tailed Tit, House Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Siskin, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Collared Dove, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush and Dunnock. Many of these species will also be found in woods across the UK.

But, did you know that you can benefit woodlands while feeding birds in your own back garden?

For every pack of Forest Feast sold, a mix created by Bill Oddie and blended by Haiths, we receive a donation. For every 2kg pack sold, we receive 17p, we get 38p for a 6k pack and £1 for each 13kg pack sold. So as you feed the birds using Forest Feast, you can also help to plant trees and protect woodland.

Now, are you wondering why we are promoting Forest Feast in the height of summer?

Until quite recently it was believed that feeding garden birds should be confined to the winter months as there was adequate food for them at other times of the year. However, scientific studies have proved that this just isn’t the case and, in fact, providing food during the summer months is just or even more important as doing so in the winter.

Of course an obvious reason to feed birds throughout the spring and summer is to help provide food for fledglings, but this has become more important as a combination of factors has reduced natural food supplies for many species. These factors are complex, but include modern farming practices (in particular year-round crop production) and a reduction in many species of insect.

Another reason to continue feeding birds throughout the summer is that species such as the Blackbird continue to raise families – sometimes up to 5 broods in one season! So unlike species of Tit which will just have one brood, birds which are more typically ground feeders – including the Robin – will continue to raise broods.

So feeding garden birds is important even during the summer months.
