This document (download the PDF here) outlines a series of simple but meaningful measurements relating to woodland biodiversity - the rich mixture of life sustained in woods.
It outlines how improvements can be made and measured and the possible effects of future activities. These same criteria could also be applied to other habitats.
Our first step has been to identify key site features which have the strongest bearing on the biodiversity value of a wood. They give a broad indication and can not answer all questions.
- Ancient Woodland
- Old Growth
- Size
- Core Area
- Woodland edge adjacent to other semi-natural habitats
- Density of semi-natural habitats
- Linkage of open ground habitats
The attributes of each of these key features is discussed in detail in the "Expanding Horizons" publication.
