Breathing Places Oct 06

Welcome to all seed gatherers

What to do with your seeds now

The Woodland Trust would like to thank you for taking part in seed gathering activities this autumn.

Now you've started gathering seeds*, we want to help by giving you tips and advice on growing and caring for them, through to planting your trees in autumn 2007.

Below you will find a range of helpful fact sheets, which you can download for free.

We've also included information on other activities you might be interested in and if you'd like to know more about our work, please sign up for our regular e-newsletter.

We're also keen to know your seed gathering experiences and any plans for your future trees. Please just email us

*If you haven't had chance to gather seeds yet, don't worry. It's not too late to take part. Many trees will still have seeds on them until November. Keep an eye on roads or paths near trees.

Fact sheets:

  • Identify your seed - found a seed you can't identify? This sheet will help you out.
  • Growing trees from seeds - provides a step by step guide to growing trees from collecting seeds and sowing them, caring for your seedlings as they develop into small trees and planting them in a suitable place.

See also The Good Seed Guide produced by the Tree Council which gives lots of useful information on growing trees from all types of seed.

Our project of the month:
The Community Woodland Network is an interactive network for community woodland groups to share information and resources. As part of the network, we're currently offering community woodland groups the chance to promote their projects on a free mini website. More

Nature notes:
November is a great time to take a walk in the woods and look out for autumn colours. This season, we're in for a particularly great display and it's also a good autumn for seeds. Find out why

What to look out for this month:

Remember many woodland animals hibernate at this time of year and may do so in your garden. Please look out for hedgehogs, for instance, when thinking about building and lighting fires for Bonfire Night.
