Vulnerable fragments of ancient woodland in Londonderry will become more resilient thanks to the Woodland Trust’s purchase of 23 hectares (58 acres) of farmland at Ervey, in the beautiful Faughan Valley, just south-east of the city.
The acquisition of Burntollet Wood, as it's now known, brings an opportunity to plant thousands of native trees. In years to come, these trees will buffer and extend the neighbouring pockets of ancient woodland, providing an extended haunt for wildlife.
Works, such as fencing and pathways, will get underway at the start of 2009. We look forward to bringing you news of tree planting events, scheduled for autumn 2009, and hope that as many people as possible – adults and children – will roll their sleeves up to dig deep. Schoolchildren, from both sides of the border, will also have the chance to take part in a series of woodland discovery days.
