When carried out as part of a large collective movement, tree planting can change whole landscapes, creating valuable habitats for wildlife. Positive and collective action is particularly important to Northern Ireland - one of the least wooded regions in Europe:
- Northern Ireland is extremely lacking when it comes to woodland, with only 6 per cent woodland cover, compared to the European average of 44 per cent. Furthermore, almost 80 per cent of our woodland is in the form of recent conifer plantations.
- Over six years, from September 2004, we will plant over 500,000 trees; creating 550 acres of new native woodland.
- We want as many people as possible, especially children, to roll their sleeves up and play an active part.
- Our aim is to develop a minimum of seven Tree For All sites. To ensure a wide geographic spread, we will identify at least one site per county. Carnmoney Hill in Newtownabbey, which is already under Woodland Trust management, has been chosen as Northern Ireland’s Tree For All flagship site.
