Natural Health Service

Better than a prescription!

The Woodland Trust Scotland working in partnership with greenspace scotland and Paths to Health presents a lunchtime seminar – “Natural Health Service – better than a prescription” – one of four parliamentary events at this year’s Scottish Environment Week.

Thursday 8 February 2007, 12:30-14:30 in Scottish Parliament Committee Room 1 “Natural Health Service – Better than a prescription!”

Scotland is sitting on a health time bomb. The health of two thirds of Scotland’s population is now at risk from physical inactivity.

The seminar will explore a number of different and innovative approaches to improve the health and well being of our communities through the quality provision and promotion of the outdoor environment.

The event includes a team quiz competition to test the guests’ knowledge of the links between greenspace and physical and mental health.

The speakers:

  • Julie Procter, greenspace scotland, will introduce the crucial health benefits of greenspace, showing how it has a positive impact on both physical and mental health and how a lack of quality greenspace has a negative impact on health and well-being.
  • Kenny Steele, Paths to Health, will show the benefits of walking and discuss ways in which the government can help improve the nation’s health.
  • Angela Douglas, the Woodland Trust Scotland, will introduce the Trust’s Space for People and Trees for All projects and the partnership work with Paths to Health.

The Host and quizmaster for the event is Patrick Harvey MSP.

Scottish Environment Week, now in its third year, creates an opportunity to focus, in Holyrood, on the importance of the environment and its value to the society and economy of Scotland.

Through the week there will be an exhibition in the Garden Lobby and a photo exhibition in the first floor lobby of The Scottish Parliament.
