Milton provides the opportunity to plant 136,147 trees and establish 48,686 by natural regeneration.
This project will be promotied through the Eco-School Programme. Schools will be asked it they want to help create one of Scotland’s largest native broadleaved woods and help the “Return of the Forest”. Those interested will be directed to a web based resource promoting involvement in creating huge areas of new native woodland. It will enthuse both pupils and teachers about the benefits of landscape scale woodland creation, new wildlife habitats, and access and recreation opportunities, about the history and give pictorial images of the landscape.
Schools participating in the programme will be sent a tree growing kit, which will include growing trays, compost, seed and instructions. The pupils will grow the trees and then they will have the option to come onto site and plant their trees after a season’s growth. For those schools who are unable to plant the trees on site will be able to send them back to site for planting
The seed growing project will be launched in Spring 2006, with 31 schools from Glasgow to Stirling receiving packs. These seeds will take 18 months to grow into saplings and it is anticipated that a number of these schools will be able to come to Milton in Autumn 2007 to plant their young trees.
Some of the schools who have signed up for this project are also coming to Glen Finglas - Lendrick - for a tree planting project on the 2nd and 3rd November, carried out in conjunction with local Rangers.
