A woodland learning project officer has been appointed to design, develop and implement a Woodland Learning Programme with West Lothian Schools. The programme offers a unique opportunity for all children in and around West Lothian to swap the "indoor" classroom for an outdoor one!. The project aims to increase teachers confidence in accessing areas of woodland located close to their schools.
One aspect of the programme will be to involve local school children in the creation of a new native woodland at North Wood, Livingston. A week-long inspirational woodland learning events will be organises providing local children with the opportunity to plant trees and witness demonstrations of woodland management techniques.
In March 2007 local school children enjoyed an adaption of the puppet show "The Man who Planted Trees" at Northwoods. The show tells the story of a shepherd who single-handedly transforms an entire region by planting thousands of trees. Like the shepherd, the children had the opportunity to plant trees and create new woodland.
