A new Africa

A little Africa has been created in the UK and it's very muddy indeed!

Children from Loders School in Bridport, Devon had a whale of a time as they began the creation of a brand new wood.

Africa Wood in Nettlecombe is one of 33 new woods being created by the Woodland Trust to mark the bi-centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Each new wood is named after one of Nelson's fleet, paying tribute to the fact that these magnificent vessels were crafted from fine native oak.

Around 40 children between six and nine years each planted a tree and ended up with their wellies covered in the gooiest mud there is.

'They all enjoyed looking and doing and learned a lot in their lively outdoor classroom. Sticky mud was just a bonus!' said headmaster, Mike Kite.

Before planting the wood, the children learnt all about the Battle of Trafalgar back at the school and had hands on nature lessons on the site of the new wood.

They plan to don their boots to visit 'Africa' again next year to see how their trees are getting on.
