Ditch monkey

Ever been camping? If so, you'll be familiar with the invigorating feeling of waking up, surrounded by nature, breathing the fresh morning air and rising to the challenge of surviving on the barest of essentials.

But for most of us, the novelty wears off after a weekend - or for the more hardy, maybe two weeks. Yet Hugh Sawyer has been braving sub zero temperatures and sleeping in a ditch every night since June 2005 - all for the Woodland Trust.

As well as raising money for a very good cause, Hugh, who likes to call himself 'the original ditch monkey', ODM for short, wants people to "think about how much they consume that is not necessary.".

He is recording his experiences in a Blog which makes fascinating reading. Readers will find out ODM's take on, amongst other things, how to avoid a shark attack, what happens to a banana if you leave it outside overnight and why pirates are called pirates.

Ditch monkey wants to raise £8,000 for the Woodland Trust. You can donate here and read his Blog here.
