Travelling acorns lead to royal invitation
This regal Tree For All story began in the Autumn of 2002 when MP Roy Beggs contacted Glamis Castle asking permission to collect up to 600 acorns from the giant oaks on the royal estate. The Scottish castle was the childhood home of the late Queen Mother. Permission was gladly granted and the seeds were collected and taken over the water to Larne in Northern Ireland.
With some tender loving care from Larne Borough Council, there they grew into fine saplings. This winter, pupils from Moyle and St MacNissi’s primary schools got digging and planted them to create a new Royal Oak Grove at the Woodland Trust’s Clements Wood. This lasting tribute to a much-loved royal provided a fitting start to Tree For All in Northern Ireland.
