Spar's 'Merry' anniversary

Spar celebrates a ‘Merry’ anniversary

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, employees from Spar Stores recently planted trees at our Merry Hill site in Hertfordshire. Spar stores are also running a competition at their stores, where you can nominate your local school to win one of our popular hedge and copse packs. They're also dedicating 2,700 native trees - one for each SPAR store - at WT woods across the UK. (Find out more about how you can dedicate a tree.)

This was one of a series of events held recently at Merry Hill.

At another event, around 30 school children from the nearby Sacred Heart School braved a very wet field to plant nine new fruit trees in our existing orchard.

Quince, plum and apple trees were planted, as well as a small copse of hazel with the help of two keen local members. Everyone went back home very muddy but very happy.

Another exciting activity held recently was our annual hedge-laying day. About 25 people, including many new volunteers and a couple of scouts, turned up to help us lay approximately 70 metres of hedge. Although it was a very cold day, the lunchtime BBQ helped keep spirits high!

Nevertheless, we’ve got several miles of hedge-laying still to do, so please look out details of next year’s event if you’d like to take part.
