Powys' children re-enact Battle of Trafalgar
Less than two months away from the bicentenary of this historic event, Powys children play their part
Coed Cadw (The Woodland Trust), the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, has lent an element of its Trafalgar Woods campaign to Penlanole Orchard in Mid-Wales. The orchard is working with local schoolchildren near Rhayader to reconstruct the Battle of Trafalgar in a pageant during the orchard’s annual “Entertainment Under the Apple Trees” Open Day on September 11th 2005.
The Trafalgar Woods campaign was created so that the Woodland Trust, and various partners and landowners, will plant 27 new woods across the UK this autumn and winter to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21st 1805. Many tree plantings will take place across the country, and in Wales, at the end of this year, involving schoolchildren and local communities in woodland conservation, and educating people on the important role of woodland in our maritime history. One wood will be planted for each of the ships of the line that was involved in the Battle.
Kavita Heyn, Development Officer Wales of Coed Cadw, says “Woodland and trees have had a remarkable part to play in our island’s naval history. Our Trafalgar Woods campaign this year is a chance to teach people about the importance of wood and woodlands throughout history, by marking this memorable event. We are delighted that Penlanole Orchard is playing its part in the campaign by organising a Battle of Trafalgar reconstruction with local children.”
The Open Day at the Orchard will start at 2pm until 6pm on Sunday September 11th, and promises to be a great day out for the whole family. In addition to the Trafalgar pageant, there will be a barbecue, various stalls, beekeepers, information from Orchard Doctors, and the Corps of Drums from the Dyfed Army Cadet Force. A small entry fee will be charged and will go to local charities.
The “Entertainment Under the Apple Trees” is hosted by Penlanole Orchard and is sponsored by the Parklands and Orchards scheme, with support from Glasu, Welsh Development Authority and Leader Plus.
