Vote for Carmel Woods

Ancient woodlands at Carmel, Carmarthenshire, could receive a massive cash boost of £45,000 to pay for essential restoration work later this month.

The Grasslands Trust, who manages this stunning wildlife site has won a place in the finals of ITV Wales The People's Millions. Viewers watching Wales Tonight on Tuesday 25 November at 6pm will be invited to vote for Carmel’s Ancient Woodland Treasures which will feature against another worthy community based project – Ferndale Skate Park Ltd.

The Grasslands Trust’s project aims to restore an area of ancient woodland the equivalent size of twenty-one millennium stadium football pitches using an army of local volunteers. Because it has been neglected for many years, grassland glades and rides which once existed inside the woodland and made it so unique, have become very badly overgrown and in some cases – completely disappeared. As a result – valuable wildlife has been lost as well. Ancient woodlands like Carmel are incredibly rare and they are important areas for birds, wildflowers, moths, butterflies and the elusive Dormouse.

If The Trust is successful in securing the people’s vote on Tuesday 25 November, then the funding will be used to train volunteers in traditional woodland management skills as well as pay for essential safety equipment and tools, such as chain saws and brush cutters and a much needed quad bike and trailer.
