Granllyn Pool

This winter, the Woodland Trust is challenging the people of Guilsfield to plant 1100 native broadleaved trees, to create a new piece of woodland at Granllyn Pool and extend the existing Woodland Trust site. The extension, some 1.3 ha (3.2 acres) in size, is of huge value for wildlife, as it is part of the Granllyn Pool SSSI and Candidate Special Area of Conservation, designated because of the rare Great Crested Newt population in Granllyn Pool itself. Planting native, broadleaves trees at the site will help to further enhance its value to wildlife.

The Trust ran a successful campaign to acquire the site during the winter of 2003-04, together with the local community and the local newspaper, the County Times. Coed Cadw was planning a public planting event at the site on Saturday 20 November, but when we discovered that the great crested newts were still active and had not hibernated as expected, we had to postpone this event until 22 January 2005.

There will be and separate tree planting event for schools at around the same time.
