Who are the Woodland Trust
The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. By acquiring sites and campaigning for woodland, we aim to conserve, restore and re-establish native woodland to its former glory. Currently we own and care for over 1,000 woods, covering over 50,000 acres.
How to Change the World with the Woodland Trust:
There are 5 challenges going on throughout the year, these are:
Challenge 1: Seed Gathering Oct/Nov 2008
Challenge 2: Christmas Card Recycling Dec/Jan 2008/09
Challenge 3: Springwatch Feb/March 2009
Challenge 4: Tree planting October 2008 to April 2009
Challenge 5: Ancient Tree Hunt May/June 2009
We estimate that each challenge will take approximately 4 weeks to complete and you can do one challenge or all five, it is up to the girls to decide. We have put suggested months against the challenges and some can only be carried out in this time period but the Ancient Tree Hunt can be done at anytime of the year and Tree planting between October and April.
We also have a monthly Inspiration Competition and we hope that you will send us stories/photos and poems about what you have done. Each month one winner will see what they sent in on our webpage and the leader will receive 1 years membership to the Nature Detectives club for the group (worth £15).
We have also collated more fun things you can do as part of your sessions, alongside any of the challenges, here.
Discuss it
Before completing any of the challenges, these are some things you might like to discuss with your group:
- Why are woodlands important?
- What lives in woodlands? Where would these animals and plants go if the woodlands were chopped down?
- How often do the girls in your group go to woodlands? What do they do their? Do they find the woodland scary or fun?
Review It
In addition, at the end of each challenge we will ask you to complete a couple of questions, for example we may say ‘how many seeds have you collected’ once you have told us we will award virtual trees to the county you are in. The more challenges you complete the more virtual trees you will receive. The league table will be on our website.
