Hearts of Oak....The trees that sailed to Trafalgar

Children were at the centre of the Trafalgar Woods project. Our education programme brought alive the links between trees, history and young people. Many of the 33 new Trafalgar Woods were planted with the help of schoolchildren. At each dedicated schools planting event, pupils were given an inspirational series of activities culminating in the opportunity to plant trees.

As well as involving around 6,000 children directly in tree planting activities at the Trafalgar Wood sites, the project provided a range of resources and supporting materials to enable all schools across the UK to undertake either commemorative planting or to structure lessons based on the events at Trafalgar and its context, including social and political history, environment and geography.

The education programme is aimed at pupils aged 7-14, but many elements of the materials produced are suitable for anyone with an interest in lifelong learning.
